A New Drug Could Help Your Dog To Live Extra 4 Years, says study

(Medical-NewsWire.com, December 11, 2015 ) I am not talking about any sci-fi movie but a drug called rapamycin has shown to increase the life span in mammals. Scientisits are currently recruiting a group of volunteers to scrutinize the drug more.

With many partner Vets, the University of Washington's Dog Aging Project is currently looking for applicants for pet dogs in the US to participate in the rapamycin research, theorizing that the drug can actually increase the lifespan of large dogs by three years and small dogs by four.

The Project director, Matthew Kaeberlein told The Dodo that 'if rapamycin works comparably in dogs as in mice, it might be possible to increase life span by 30% and delay many of the declines in function and aging diseases that are shared by mice, dogs and people”.

The best part of rapamycin it has not just helped in prolonging the years of animal's lives but has even benefited their overall health efficiently so what if the treatment was initiated a bit too late in their lives.

Kaeberlein is of the opinion that “in addition to raising the lifespan, rapamycin as seen in normal lab mice reverses the age associted cardiac dysfunction, improve the response on vaccine, protects the brain against Alzheimer's, age associated cognitive decline and many other forms of cancer and fighting obesity”.

He further stated that the cardiac and anti-cancer effects will be quite easier to detect and perhaps benefit overall health of dogs.

As the initial phase of the study was completed, Kaeberlein says that rabamycin did not cause any side effects and the team hopes to expand the study further with many doggy volunteers.

This dog aging research has led to an even more surprising fact one out of 5 middle aged dogs were screened for study that revealed many heart dysfunction making cardiac diseases a far bigger problem than generally assumed.

“As we looked by echocardiogram, we saw signifcant dysfunction in about 20% of dogs that came for the initial exam, even though they did not show any symptoms of heart trouble”, says Kaeberlein.

While taking care of your dog is a crucial element by keeping stress away, following healthy routing, there are natural remedies as well that helps the dog to preserve their heart from any disease.
