Chemical Flame Retardants Linked to Thyroid Disease in Cats

(Medical-NewsWire.com, December 12, 2015 ) Though researchers claim that there is no evidence to support the threat to humans posed by the chemical called polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) they cannot rule out the possibility.

Researcher Linda S. Birnbaum, director of the Experimental Toxicology Division at the US Environmental Protection Agency, says that “cats are very highly exposed to these type of chemicals and the levels in cats are higher than the levels in people”. She does add that cats may be a good indicator of how indoor exposure of chemicals affect the human body as well.

Few of the symptoms include weight loss, increase in hunger, hair loss, irritability etc. Feline hyperthyroidism is one of the most common and deadly disease in older cats. Indoor pets are at a greater risk due to exposure to conscientious grooming thus ingesting a whole load of house dust that contains PBDEs.

Concerns of health effects regarding PBDEs were initiated in lated 1990s though studies found that chemicals cause liver and nerve toxicity in animals. A recent study found that breast milk in women contains levels of PBDEs and house dust.

Many PBDEs such as penta have been used in polyurethane foam (used in furniture cushions or pillows) have been banned from many states by the US government or internationally.

Another thing to note is the fact that these chemical components are quite persistent and compulsive which makes them stay in the environment for a while before they disappear.

EPA is looking for safe alternatives that can be used as flame retardants not to mention a safe product that do not posse a threat to humans or animals. Till now there are 14 alternative flame retardants that have been found useful and many furniture foam manufacturers are using new alternatives, according to EPA.

The case study

As per Birnbaum and her colleagues took blood samples from 23 cats in which 11 of them were dealing with hyperthyroidism. They noted that cats who were dealing with these chemicals had three times high thyroid than younger cats or cats without this condition.

Now here's the bitter fact. These chemicals (PBDEs) were also found in canned cat found especially in fish/sea flavors such as salmon, whitefish etc. A study claimed that canned food had 12 times greater chemicals than dry food diets. This means that cats are ingested with 100 times more chemicals than American adults.

If that's not all, US have been reported to possess high levels of PBDE globally which is ne of the reason cat hyperthyroidism is on the rise in US. By late 1990s, North America have been accounted for almost half of the worldwide demand for PBDE for using them in furniture and upholstery.

Here is a brand new info for you. Hyperthyroidism in cats, the epidemic was started almost 30 years ago which is almost the same time when PBDEs were used in many household material for fire prevention. This disease has been seen in many areas such as Canada, Australia, Japan and many other parts of Europe.

It is upto you to take care of indoor pollutants by using the right air purifier to get rid of dust, mold or other allergens in your house but at the same time the responsibility als falls in your shoulders to take care of your cat who is dealing with thyroid risks. There are many natural remedies for cats available online that will work safely without triggering any side effects. With a positive nod from your Vet, your cat will be healthy and fit in the years to come.
