Air purifier sales steep low by 20% in China as the air quality improves

(Medical-NewsWire.com, December 16, 2015 ) It wasn't much long that China was dealing with heavy smog and beeline formed in many retailers for picking up quality air purifiers. Among the few silver linings in China was the spiking level of air purifiers in the market that shot up abruptly due to clouding pollution that last more than couple of weeks triggering many health risks.

So bad was the air in cities such as Beijing and so much was the health risk that consumers were willing to pay more than Rmb 2,000 ($330) for a purifier to clean the indoor air they breathe.

However, there has been a recent slope even for the biggest companies as bad air no longer generates bumper revenues. This is because by recently the air quality has improved a great extent says companies and consultants likewise.

Airgle, an US company that has been targeting a high end purifier via 250 crores in China and by online saw a 10-20% decrease in sales this year so far as mentioned by Ivan Lo, president of Airgle. The reason he provides is because of the raise in competitors.

Bengt Rittri, chief executive of Blueair, says that “200 new competitors have entered the market las year” that is the reason behind this huge drop down in sales. He says that the sudden impact in 2013 played a huge role in drawing companies to seekentry in the market. The market suddenly exploded and everyone wanted an air purifier.

Air purifiers were selling like hot cakes and surprisinly for ridiculous amount of money ranging from $500 to $1000 considering the fact that everyone would need it for their bedroom, living room etc.

Around 5.1m air purifiers were sold across China during the year 2014 claims a report produced by China Market Monitor (a market research company). There has been more than 18% decline in sale by first quarter of 2015 and has gone down another 13.1% down by the second half as the air quality improves in many areas.

However, growing competition and improving air is not all bad news for air purifier manufacturers says Mr. Rittri of Blueair. They claim that since Blueair has a range of products from low to high end, the competition has not effectedthe much and in fact they have doubled their sales last year and are planning to grow due to their various new launches.
