According to the Canadian Cancer Society, an estimated 4,100 new cases of oral cancer were diagnosed in Canada in just 2013. "These signs don't necessarily mean that the patient has oral cancer, but we have the training to make sure that these are indeed caused by something else," admonishes Dr. Ishimoto. "And when we catch the signs of oral cancer early, we increase the chances of a successful treatment of the disease."
According to Dentist Lahaina, patients can help minimize the probability of getting oral cancer.
"We tell our Lahaina patients that the really should avoid all types of tobacco products, and if they drink they should only do so in moderation," says Dr. Ishimoto. "A healthy diet is important, and we also advise our patients to limit their exposure to the sun by using sun-blocking lotions on their lips and skin."
