Children Who Are Prescribed Zyprexa, Risperal, And Abilify Have Triple The Risk Of Developing Type 2 Diabetes
The recent study supports findings from Vanderbilt University where researchers there found that children who took antipsychotic drugs, such as Zyprexa, Risperal, and Abilify have triple the risk of developing type 2 diabetes compared to youth who took other drugs to treat the same medical conditions. In their 2013 study, researchers reviewed data from more than 28,000 patients from 6 to 24 years old who were enrolled in Tennessee’s Medicaid program and were prescribed Abilify, Risperdal, Seroquel and Zyprexa over a 12-year period. The study indicated that a child’s risk for type 2 diabetes was present almost immediately within the first year of the child taking the antipsychotic medication, and continued for one year after the child stopped taking the drugs.
