Heroin Deaths Increase as Flakka Use Declines, West Palm Beach Drug Rehab Comments

(Medical-NewsWire.com, March 08, 2016 ) West Palm Beach, FL -- The Sun-Sentinel reports that, in the wake of reports that Flakka use in decreasing in West Palm Beach, heroin-related overdose deaths are once again on the rise. As reported by police, the decrease in Flakka use throughout the state is likely due to a ban in China of the ingredients used to produce the hallucinogenic, and potentially fatal drug.

Unfortunately, though the decrease in Flakka is a welcome relief, the resulting influx of heroin overdose deaths is alarming. Delray Beach, a neighbor to the south of West Palm Beach, experienced 10 heroin overdose deaths in all of 2015; in the first few months of 2016 there have been 51 overdoses. Police throughout South Florida are increasing their efforts to combat this heroin-related death spike, including public education and investigation into suspected drug trafficking cases.

West Palm Beach Drug Rehab has seen the effects of this increase first hand. As a facility offering heroin rehab in West Palm Beach, West Palm Beach Drug Rehab works tirelessly to combat the horrible consequences of heroin abuse on communities across South Florida and the entire U.S. Though the news that bans in China are aiding to decrease Flakka abuse in the U.S. is encouraging, trading one lethal drug for another is in no way a solution to our problem.

A representative of West Palm Beach Drug Rehab comments,

"With the sudden appearance of Flakka as a big time threat to South Florida communities, our attention shifted to eradicating that threat, taking some of our focus from the ever-present danger that is heroin abuse. As we often see with fluctuating trends in substance abuse, as Flakka is now losing it's popularity and becoming less available, heroin abuse is once again moving back to the top. Unfortunately this is hardly a win for anyone; both drugs pose serious health risks to those who use and abuse them. The fight against the addiction epidemic must be fought on multiple fronts at once, lest we continue to perpetuate this cycle of ups and downs with no real solution."
