Turkey Tail Mushrooms Could Help Patients Fight Cancer

Activa Naturals 100% natural Turkey Tail Mushroom Supplement

(Medical-NewsWire.com, June 06, 2016 ) Beaverton, Oregon -- Research investigating the properties of turkey tail mushroom (Trametes versicolor) and their impact on the immune system has highlighted potential benefits for cancer patients. A study funded by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) examined the effects ofturkey tail mushrooms on breast cancer patients following radiation therapy. The study titled "Phase I Clinical Trial of Trametes versicolor in Women with Breast Cancer," was published in the ISRN Oncology Journal.

The researchers were particularly interested to determine if consuming turkey tail mushrooms could elevate the immune system function after treatment for cancer. Immunity is measured by determining the natural killer cell activity and the number of lymphocyte cells. After radiation treatment, the immune system becomes suppressed.

The researchers based at the Bastyr University Research Institute and the University of Minnesota Medical School found that natural killer cell count could be elevated following turkey tail mushroom consumption. Higher levels of these killer cells can quickly attack any remaining cancerous cells and potentially increase the chances of full recovery from cancer.

Turkey tail mushrooms have long been used in traditional medical treatments for hundreds of years throughout Europe, Asia and North America. Some of the earliest recorded of using these mushrooms to brew therapeutic tea dates back to the 15th century. Since the 1960's, Japanese researchers have been studying the beneficial properties of these mushrooms.

These mushrooms have strong antiviral compounds which have been found to be very active against the human papilloma virus (HPV) and hepatitis C virus. Both these viruses can cause cervical cancer and liver cancer respectively. The viruses are sometimes referred to as "oncoviruses" because they can induce cancer. Turkey tail mushrooms may be able to lessen the chances of getting cancer by reducing activity of oncoviruses.

Currently there is little interest in using turkey tail mushrooms as an immune therapy drug. This is because it is unlikely to qualify as patentable due to the long term, wide spread history of therapeutic applications. Consequently pharmaceutical companies would be unable to make money from this therapy.

Nevertheless, the good news is that turkey tail mushrooms are available in supplement form. People interested in boosting their immune system and increasing protection from cancers can source high quality turkey tail supplements. Remember to always double-check the ingredients and ensure that the product is supplied by a reputable company.
