(Medical-NewsWire.com, August 18, 2016 ) Erythropoietin (EPO), also referred to as hematopoietin or hemopoietin, is a glycoprotein responsible for producing erythrocytes in the body. In the fetal stage, this protein is produced in the liver; it is secreted by the kidneys in adulthood. During anemic conditions, the body produces an excess of EPO, maintaining the normal levels of red blood cells (RBC). When the endogenous production of EPO is disturbed because of diseases or the use of medications, the normal RBC levels can be maintained by an external supply of EPO-stimulating agents (ESAs). These agents are similar to the natural EPO in structure and function and are administered as injections. They can be produced by recombinant DNA technology and are used to treat anemia due to kidney diseases, cancer, HIV, injuries, or neural diseases.
