Open Source Development Labs

(EMAILWIRE.COM, January 16, 2007 ) Mountain View, CA – The Open Source Development Labs (OSDL), a global consortium dedicated to accelerating the adoption of Linux and open source software, today announced that its Carrier Grade Linux (CGL) Working Group has become the newest member of the Mountain View Alliance (MVA), a consortium of open specification organizations in the telecommunications industry. The OSDL CGL Working Group becomes the eighth member of the Mountain View Alliance which was founded in 2005. The addition of the CGL Working Group fulfills the vision of the Mountain View Alliance of bringing an operating system specification to the consortium, such that all key interfaces of the network equipment platform ecosystem are now represented. As a consortium of organizations, the combined, MVA membership comprises more than 500 companies including semiconductor, platform, operating system and middleware suppliers.“With the addition of the OSDL CGL Working Group to the MVA, all the organizations who specify open interfaces between the layers of the carrier grade base platforms are now represented within the forum, further solidifying the effectiveness of our members and the ecosystem as a whole,” said Henry Turko, SCOPE’s and SAForum’s representative to MVA . “We look forward to integrating the CGL Working Group into our alliance to accelerate the driving of open specifications based solutions, creating a broader foundation of innovation and effectiveness.”OSDL established the CGL Working Group over five years ago to gather requirements, establish roadmaps, publish specifications, define architectures, and sponsor the open source projects needed to achieve a true, carrier-grade Linux. Since its inception, CGL has enjoyed rapid uptake and successful adoption. Multiple Linux distribution suppliers today ship software platforms based on the CGL specifications, with telecommunications OEMs and carriers shipping and deploying increasing volumes of CGL-compliant equipment into the global network infrastructure.“The CGL Working Group is a significant and important addition to the Mountain View Alliance — our membership represents a natural progression for the wider adoption of COTS solutions,” said Glenn Seiler, CGL steering committee chair for OSDL. “Working with the MVA validates both organizations’ commitment to the development and promotion of COTS telecommunications solutions.” Mountain View Alliance and CGL at the Communications Ecosystem ConferenceOn February 28 and March 1 the inaugural Communications Ecosystem Conference, sponsored by the Mountain View Alliance consortium will take place in San Diego, CA. The conference will highlight the rapid adoption of open specification-based carrier grade building blocks and base platforms. In addition to a special session on Carrier Grade Linux, all the member consortia of Mountain View Alliance will present keynote talks, panel sessions and educational sessions on the rapid growth of Commercial Off-The-Shelf (COTS) products and technologies for telecommunications.
