Gluten Free Beauty: WorldÂ’s Fastest-Growing Food Trend Making its Way into the Beauty Industry?

(EMAILWIRE.COM, December 23, 2011 ) Wilmington, NC - Gluten Free Beauty founder Kristen Campbell made the switch to cosmetic products free of gluten, a protein found in wheat, barley, rye, and oats (which are often contaminated with gluten via processing) in her mid-twenties, after suffering from debilitating acne and rashes caused by the gluten-containing beauty products she was using. According to Campbell, “After years of going from one doctor to the next, searching for a cure for my skin problems, my seemingly unrelated digestive symptoms helped lead to the diagnosis of gluten intolerance. So then I So then I thought, ’if I can’t eat gluten, why would I apply it to my skin.’ So I stopped using beauty products containing gluten, and my skin problems stopped as well.”

Earlier this year, Time Magazine reported that consumer spending on gluten-free foods continues to climb with seemingly unstoppable momentum, totaling to $2.6 billion in 2010. But Campbell believes that this fast-moving trend is also crossing over into the beauty industry. “I hear from women and men nearly every day who have made the connection between topical sources of gluten and the problems they are having with their skin.”

According to a recent study at George Washington University, people with celiac disease should avoid topical cosmetics containing gluten. Researcher Dr. Pia Prakash had this to say, "The findings are alarming because gluten-containing cosmetics can be inadvertently obtained by the consumer and use of these products can result in an exacerbation of celiac disease.”

While celiac disease affects 1 in 100 Americans, some experts estimate that up to 30% of the population may also be sensitive to gluten, a protein that according to Dr. Alessio Fassano, “we are not engineered to digest.” Campbell, who suffers from gluten intolerance, falls into the 30% and was named a “Skinnovator” by Prevention Magazine in November 2011, for developing a beauty line catering specifically to the needs of the gluten-free community.

“I know that gluten-free beauty products are here to stay,” says Campbell. “Not only by watching the growth in the number of beauty companies who are labeling gluten-free products accordingly, but also because of the fact that I hear from (and am one of) these people whose lives have been affected by it, and who will never go back to using gluten-containing beauty products after seeing the benefits to their own skin by using gluten-free personal care products.”
