Bunionregulator.org suggest exercises to be performed after bunion surgery

(EMAILWIRE.COM, April 24, 2012 ) New York City, NY -- When bunion surgery is performed, the joints near the toe can become stiff. The stiffness in the toe joint can be prevented if people stretch their foot regularly. Apart from doing regular stretching exercises, they must do several other exercises as it will help in faster recovery and prevent stiffness of the big toe joint. Initially the patients are advised rest because it reduces the recovery period. Two weeks after the surgery, the following exercises can be followed by people who have undergone the surgery.

Exercises to be followed after 2 weeks

People who have undergone a bunion surgery can start with mild exercises. One of the exercises that can be performed is the grabbing of the toe and holding the fingers close to the toe joint. When doing this exercise, people must not hold their interphalangeal joint as it could aggravate the wounds of the surgery. After grabbing their big toe, they must now gently flex the big toe until they feel mild discomfort and resistance. Hold the toe in this position for about 15 seconds and repeat the exercise 3 times. This exercise can also be performed by flexing the big toe downwards. This exercise can be performed up to 4 weeks after the surgery. In the fifth and the sixth week, the same exercise can be performed but number of repetitions should be increased. This exercise can be done 6 times in a day in the fifth and sixth week.

Exercises to be followed after 6 weeks

From the seventh week, people can start doing weight bearing and gravity assisted exercises. To do this exercise, people must stand and keep the toe on the ground. They must then put their body weight on the toe to force flexion of the big toe. People must try to hold this position for 8 to 10 seconds. Some of the other exercises people can do after six weeks is climbing the stairs and walking uphill.

People, who are unable to bear the pain of the above exercises, can do the following exercise to improve the flexibility of their big toe. This exercise can be done by grabbing the big toe near the big toe joint with their hand and using the other hand to grab the forefoot. Try to flex the toe in outward direction and use the other hand to stabilize the forefoot and to push big toe upwards without bending it. Hold this position for about 12 seconds and perform 3 repetitions of this exercise. This exercise can also be done by pushing the toe down without bending it.

Tips to prevent Bunion

The problem of bunion can be avoided if people wear proper fitting footwear. It is a good idea to buy shoes in the evening as the legs usually get swollen in the evening. To avoid this problem, people must keep their feet clean by washing it twice a day. People, who are diabetic, must visit a foot doctor at least once in a year. If they feel pain, they can use bunion aids like bunion regulator and bunion splints. When people use bunion regulators, it can help in reducing the symptoms of the problem.
