(EMAILWIRE.COM, April 25, 2012 ) Delray Beach, FL -- Student resource and degree program network, Nursingschoolsdirect.com, recently reported that compassion fatigue is akin to the stress-induced fatigue and depression that can adversely affect the performance of nursing students. Compassion fatigue, a well-known problem in the nursing industry, occurs when nurses become tired, depressed, or anxious due to consistent exposure to the illnesses of others. The symptoms of compassion fatigue are similar to post-traumatic stress disorder and include depression, anxiety, hopelessness, depression, and feeling generally “unwell.”
In a recent report from the Department of Defense, clinical psychologist Joseph Bobrow said of compassion fatigue, “The same seed of empathy and compassion that draws us to the work that we do, if it’s taken to an extreme, is the same seed that could lead us down the slippery slope to burnout.”
Students in nursing schools exhibit similar symptoms to compassion fatigue, according to Jocelyn Reed of Nursingschoolsdirect.com. “Nursing students need to be aware that they will face periods of stress and burnout. They also need to be aware that the coping mechanisms they will learn to apply to compassion fatigue when it happens work really well for student fatigue, too,” Reed says.
Most nurses experience compassion fatigue at least once in their career and many experience it multiple times. Recovering from the condition is much harder than preventing it from occurring. Nursing students learn early-on that handling the stress of school is important practice for what they will face after graduation.
Reed recently published a report discussing the effects of compassion fatigue and why nursing schools cover this condition heavily in their program. In the article, she writes, “Most nursing schools will teach students some of the best ways to identify and manage fatigue in their chosen profession. Since most nurses are subjected to long days and long weeks of working, it is important for student nurses to understand that this grueling schedule will take a toll if the nurse is not eating the proper foods, exercising, and getting enough rest.”
