Pharmacology, the study of how drugs interact with living organisms, is growing much faster than other areas of the job market according to the Bureau of Labor and Statistics. In the report, Lansing describes the most obvious difference between the jobs: “…students who wish to work in the pharmaceuticals industry should understand that there is a major difference between pharmacy and pharmacology; namely, the pharmacy,” she writes.
Pharmacists can come from any number of scientific backgrounds, provided they have a degree that will be commiserate with the requirements for entering a school’s Pharm. D program. Pharmacologists are trained in the specific science of medicine as it relates to living things – whether behavioral or physical effect. They are hired by pharmaceutical companies, research agencies, schools, and foundations to conduct or supervise studies in medicine.
