The infographic was designed to educate the public about the history and current dangers posed by transvaginal surgical mesh.
Transvaginal mesh is a synthetic mesh that is implanted through the vagina that treats pelvic organ prolapse (POP) and stress urinary incontinence (SUI).
Pelvic organ prolapse is a condition in which the pelvic organs slip-out-of-place and descend, or bulge, into the vagina. This is caused by undergoing a hysterectomy or multiple childbirths. SUI is a condition in which women suffer involuntary loss of urine during physical activities such as sneezing, coughing, laughing or exercising.
The infographic illustrates how several vaginal mesh products, all of which are the subject of hundreds of lawsuits, attained approval from the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) due to the mesh's similarity to other products, which have since been recalled. The infographic can be found on the Modern Day Moms website.
Additionally, the infographic illustrates key events that occurred during the history of the device, including details about reports the FDA received before issuing a formal warning against the device in July of 2011.
In its report, the FDA cited more than one hundred manufacturer complaints about complications associated with the device. According to that report, the most commonly and consistently reported complication was mesh erosion, where the device erodes into surrounding tissues. When this happens, the mesh wears through the vaginal wall, exposing its rough and uncomfortable surface to the patient, and sometimes felt by her partner during intercourse.
The nature of the device makes it difficult to remove, with fewer than three surgeons in the United States who are able to fully remove the mesh. Oftentimes, because the mesh is designed to grow around human tissue, multiple surgeries may be required to fully remove the mesh.
Several women also have complained of mesh shrinkage, bleeding, infection, painful urination, painful sexual intercourse, and reoccurrence of pelvic organ prolapse (POP) and stress urinary incontinence (SUI), which the mesh is supposed to treat.
The FDA warned healthcare professionals about the dangers of this device in 2008. The agency asked surgeons to receive specialized training on how to properly implant the device and asked health care providers to warn their patients of any risks the agency deemed as serious, but rare. In the years since, the FDA has updated its stance on the medical device, stating that the benefits do not outweigh the risks.
