(Medical-NewsWire.com, August 13, 2012 ) San Francisco, CA -- According to recent publications made in the British Journal of Dermatology by Charlotte Vrijman and a number of colleagues from the University of Amsterdam have termed thyroid disease to be prevalent in patients who already suffer from the extremely rare condition of vitiligo.
"Thyroid disease has been suggested to be associated with vitiligo…the outcomes of prevalence studies on thyroid disease in vitiligo vary widely," the publication read.
The condition, which causes depigmentation in patches of the skin, something which happened to former famous pop singer and legendary icon, Michael Jackson, already had been showing evidence of being a combination of various factors for its cause such as genetic, environmental and autoimmune. While thyroid is also largely made of these dynamics, experts had already believed there to be some link between the two.
Found on news-medical.net is a report by Helen Albert, which gives the facts and figures as to how patients with vitiligo were found to be more likely to have the diseases by up to 1.9 times as compared to a normal tolerant. The autoimmune thyroid disease was found to be 2.5 times more likely while development of thyroid specific antibodies was at the highest at 5.2 times.
In order to come up with the numbers, the researchers at the University of Amsterdam went into the details of over 48 studies that had recorded findings from learning on more than 24,000 vitilgo patients between 1968 and 2011. Some studies even compared them to non-vitilgo sufferers, which was another useful part of the research.
Final conclusions from various studies over a period of time came out to be at 15.1% of vitiligo patients were suffering from the disease, while 14.3% and 20.8% came out to be the numbers for the autoimmune and auto-antibodies versions respectively.
For vitilgo patients around the world and especially those medical practitioners dealing with the condition, this study has opened a lot of doors on how it may be able to be treated more effectively in the future.
