(Medical-NewsWire.com, August 21, 2012 ) Memphis, TN -- Founded in 1968 to find a solution for the poverty and racial division of Memphis, the Metropolitan Inter-Faith Association (MIFA) works to unite the Memphis community and address the challenges of poverty. Through their three main focus areas, MIFA provides services and programs for seniors, families in crisis and teens. The goal of each program is to help individuals sustain their independence, transform their lives and prepare for success. MIFA’s programs and services include:
MIFA Meals on Wheels: Through Meals on Wheels, homebound elderly and seniors are provided with hot, nutritious lunches for each weekday. To be eligible for the program, individuals must be nutritionally at-risk seniors (over age 60) due to illness or disability and reside in Shelby, Fayette, Tipton or Lauderdale counties.
Handyman Program: This program assists low-income senior homeowners with minor but critical home repairs. Projects are conducted by staff, contractors and volunteers and may include repairs to floors, bathrooms, exterior siding, roofs, windows and doors. Projects may also include electrical, heating and plumbing systems work. For those with physical disabilities, Handyman also constructs wheelchair ramps, installs bathroom grab bars, distributes donated wheelchairs and walkers and offers education on basic home maintenance and energy efficiency.
Senior Companion: Senior Companion pairs low-income, able seniors with homebound, disabled or critically ill peers to provide respite for family caregivers and assist peers with the activities of daily living. Companions are supervised and assigned by local Memphis agencies. To be eligible for this program, companions must be over 55 years of age and complete a 40-hour pre-service training.
MIFA Housing Opportunities: The Housing Opportunities program provides homeless families with transitional housing. The program also offers life skills education, case management services, counseling, employment guidance, housing location, budgeting and debt reduction classes through its Life Skills Institute. To be eligible, applicants must be homeless Shelby County resident with children up to the age of 17. Applicants must be able to prove county residency and homelessness and be employed or employable.
