(Medical-NewsWire.com, August 22, 2012 ) San Francisco, CA -- A renowned group of researchers have recently discovered that some bioactive constituents of breast milk actually reduce the chances of transferring HIV from an infected mother to her child. This finding was posted online in the Journal of Clinical Nutrition on 17 August 2012.
Lars Bode (PhD.), who is an assistant professor at the Pediatrics Department at the University of California said,
“In underdeveloped nations women are torn by the dilemma of whether or not to breastfeed their child. Actually giving breast milk could increase the chances of infant death from HIV, and not feeding in that manner makes the child susceptible to other diseases related to the intestines.”
Thus, Bodes and his team became determined to discover why the majority of children being breastfed, did not suffer from HIV-1, regardless of being exposed to the virus for long periods through their mother’s milk. It was revealed that even if antiretroviral medicines are avoided, only 10 to 15% of children get the HIV transmitted infection.
It was shown that human milk oligosaccharide (HMO), a unique form of carbohydrates, was known to protect the child from the transmission of the virus. This complex item is the third most essential part of breast milk. This item is not easily digested so it is located on the surface of the gastrointestinal tract.
The researchers even looked over the quantity of HMO present, along with its overall composition in the light of 200 samples of milk collected from women. This was carried out in Lusaka, Zambia and the results were used as follow on for over a period of 24 months, starting out after the child was born. Most of these women were sampled before the results related to HMO were actually uncovered.
There were lesser risks of transference of post natal HIV if high levels of HMO were found. This finding ignored any other risks that could possibly give an adverse result. Researchers then finally stated that in the future a better understanding of HMO and its effects on HIV along with antiretroviral tactics could lead to increased protection and reduced risks.
