Many people might not have known him, but there are a huge number of people who have used and loved the famous home treadmill in their homes and gyms. The creator of this famous exercise machine died at the age of 96, on Thursday, at his home in Clifton, N.J.
His passion for the treadmill can be seen in the fact that he was seen on a treadmill as recently as two months ago.
Staub was a mechanical engineer by profession; he was responsible for both the making and marketing of his first treadmill. In the 1960s, Staub realized the need for an exercise machine which could help people who had no place to walk, or had a lot of inclement weather to deal with when wanting to enjoy a healthy walk. He came up with this machine as a tool for walking exercises.
The inspiration behind this reinvention by Staub was a book by Dr. Kenneth Cooper. Dr. Cooper is a pioneer in health & fitness programs. Moreover, he has played a great role in motivating people to exercise. He said about Staub, “The treadmills we were using were very expensive, but there wasn't one on the market for the masses. And that's why he said, 'We need this,' I encouraged it. I said, 'If you can develop a treadmill that could be used in a home or an apartment it would be a slam dunk.' And it was."
Staub’s idea was not just to make treadmills, but bring innovation in the industry of exercise machines. His son shared his dream about selling 10 to 12 treadmills a day. He did not only make it, he also spent all his efforts in the promotion of the treadmill. He played a very important role in making people aware of the importance of exercise and health. He didn’t just recommend the use of the treadmill to others, he actually used it himself and always emphasised ohealth and exercise in his own life as well. His personal commitment to exercise helped him sell his famous invention.
