Study reveals obesity is associated with reduced academic performance reports LoseBellyFat101.org

(Medical-NewsWire.com, September 05, 2012 ) San Francisco, CA -- According to a recent study in the United States, children experiencing health complications due to being obese have a lower IQ which is linked to lower school performance. The study was conducted in New York University under the supervision of Dr Antonio Convit, a professor of medicine and psychiatry at NYU School.

The researchers of the study compared 49 children with metabolic syndromes associated with obesity. The study revealed that the children having metabolic syndromes not only have lower scores in spelling and math, their mental flexibility and attention span was also lesser. The test results from the research showed the spelling scores were four points less on an average in the metabolic syndrome group while math scores were 10 points lower.

“The kids with metabolic syndrome took longer to do tasks, could not read as well and had poorer math scores. These findings indicate that kids with metabolic syndrome do not perform well on things that are very relevant to school performance. The message is that just being overweight and obese is already impacting your brain. Kids who are struggling with their weight and moving toward having metabolic syndrome may have lower grades, which could ultimately lead to lower professional achievement in the long run” Dr Convit said, according to the telegraph.co.uk.

Previously, a number of similar studies suggested that adults with health complications as a result of obesity show deficiency in mental flexibility and thinking ability. This is the first research suggesting that children with metabolic syndrome have the same problem as adults. It was also concluded that even a few years of health complications related with obesity or being overweight may cause serious complications, which can lead to reduced performance in the long-run.

Now, when it has been determined that obesity is linked with reduced academic performance and mental flexibility, further research is required to establish that whether the complications can be reversed with proper health care and considerable weight reduction.
