(Medical-NewsWire.com, September 07, 2012 ) Ilfov, Romania -- Peptic ulcer disease affects millions of people around the world each year, but thanks to increasing awareness there are many ways that sufferers can treat their symptoms simply and from the comfort of their own home.
HealBlog.net , a site dedicated to educating the world about common health ailments, health news and treatments, is working to provide sufferers of ulcers with treatment options.
“Ulcer pain is something that affects millions of people, yet they may not know that they have an ulcer, or they may be unsure of how they can treat the pain,” said a contributor to HealBlog.net. “Ulcers affect an individual’s quality of life and they can be incredibly painful, but there are some simple remedies and solutions for controlling the pain and eliminating the suffering.”
HealBlog.net offers the following tips for calming ulcer pain:
1. Take an antacid. Antacids are inexpensive, over-the-counter medications that can ease the pain and burning of an ulcer. Before taking an antacid, however, it’s wise to consult your doctor, because certain antacids can cause constipation or diarrhea, depending on its ingredients.
2. Reduce acid production. Consult your doctor about the use of H2 blockers, which are drugs that help your stomach reduce its production of acid.
3. Eliminate beverages and foods with high acid levels. This means giving up the orange juice, and other citrus juices, coffee, tomato juice and spicy foods. All of these foods can aggravate the pain you feel from an ulcer, so it’s best to limit or eliminate them from your diet.
4. Do not follow the old myth that milk eases ulcer pain. Until recently it was though that milk was good for ulcers, but it has recently been discovered that the calcium and proteins found in milk actually stimulate acid production, thus aggravating the symptoms of your ulcer.
5. Drink water. Water is great for ulcer pain because it can dilute the acid found in the stomach.
6. Eliminate smoking. Smoking poses a number of other health risks, and in addition to these, it can also interfere with the process of lesions healing, and increases your chance of infection.
7. Alcohol should be consumed in small quantities. Stomach inflammation and bleeding can be increased by excessive alcohol consumption.
8. Be tested for Helicobacter Pylori. Consult your doctor to be tested for the presence of this bacterium that is the main cause of ulcers and is also treatable.
9. Avoid taking aspirin and ibuprofen. If used over an extended period of time, these over-the-counter drugs can contribute to a peptic ulcer.
10. Eliminate stress from your life. It may be easier said than done, but stress is a major contributor to ulcers.
“Peptic ulcers are becoming a real problem nowadays as stress, junk food and bacteria seem to surround us everywhere,” said a Heal Blog contributor. “Handled with care and medical advice peptic ulcer can be defeated and life can regain its normal course once again.”
