Quit Smoking Campaign ‘Stoptober’ taking place in England reports Examiner.com

(Medical-NewsWire.com, September 11, 2012 ) San Francisco, CA - Smokers all across England are being told to stop smoking in a public awareness campaign funded by the government.

Research suggests that people, who can quit it for that time period, will avoid it in the future as well. ‘Stoptober’ will start officially in October, as the name suggests, and will end within 28 days.

“This is the first time that the government has launched a campaign and addressed the subject of mass smoking so seriously,” said Chief Medical Officer, Sally Davies.

This campaign will focus on different mediums of mass media to get the message across. TV and radio advertising will be used primarily. Focus will also be laid upon automated messages and road demonstrations all over England. Keeping in mind social networking and the obsession with technology, a Facebook page and ‘Stoptober’ app have also been launched.

The local Health Minister was recently seen on BBC Breakfast, where he declared that he had given up smoking in light of ‘Stoptober’ as well and hoped to keep on this habit. He also said that if people work collectively to achieve this goal, it could reduce the overall rates of smoking.

Robert West, who spends his time at University College London looking into the effects of smoking and usage of tobacco, revealed that smokers can’t stop suddenly. They stop in a method known as “clumps”.

Socialization plays an important part in our lives, so we tend to follow those around us. Starting this as a group or mass movement will definitely lead to success because people are more likely to quit smoking for social reasons. This social inclusion also reduces the chances of the falling back on cigarette use.

The Director of Tobacco Control at Cancer Research UK said that smoking is seen in one in four cancer deaths and its vital to make people quit. This is most certainly a positive step that could go a long way to breaking the addiction.
