This announcement came shortly after Baird travelled to Jordan.
According to the reports, the foreign minister promised medical supplies and aid to Syria through the Canadian welfare group, Canadian Group for Syria. However, upon finding some doubts that the supplies might be used for the infrastructures and warehouses of the welfare group, John Baird announced, in the last month, that the aid will not be delivered to Canadian Group for Syria.
“We wanted to ensure that supplies could make their way to the victims of the Assad regime in the best way possible, and that it wouldn’t fund things like warehouses and infrastructure. The current intention will not be pursued. We will find alternatives. The situation in Syria is a top priority for me, for my department and for our allies, and that’s why we’ll be moving as expeditiously as we possibly can.” Baird said, according to The Globe and Mail.
John Baird claimed that the priority of the Canadian government remains to help the people of Syria. However, they will be sending the aid through some other means to ensure that the money reaches the people in need, and in the most effective way.
After hearing about the change of plans from the foreign minister, the spokesman from the Canadian Group for Syria, Momtaz Almoussly, expressed shock and stated that no one from the group told anyone that the money would be used for some other purpose, except medical supplies and equipment. Almoussly refused to comment any further and said that he will look further into the matter.
