(Medical-NewsWire.com, October 27, 2012 ) San Francisco, CA- Jenny Rasmussen and her family plan to participate in the upcoming diabetes walk, and have a particularly personal reason for joining the walk. The Rassumen’s 9-year-old son, Ryan was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes.
Mrs. Rasmussen said that she and her family had no idea her son was afflicted with the disease until they felt forced to take him to the emergency room.
"At the time we didn't know what was wrong," Rasmussen said. "Doctors thought it was night terrors. He would wake up in the middle of the night for two hours and drink water nonstop."
After the symptoms lasted for weeks, the Rasmussen’s doctor ran a urine test to rule out diabetes, and discovered Ryan was positive for Type 1.
The Rasmussen’s, along with family members and friends, will be participating in the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation’s Walk to Cure Diabetes, which will occur Sunday. The walk will be held at Metropark in Dexter.
Young Ryan is now insulin dependent, and must count carbs, test his blood sugar levels, and utilize insulin pumps that are worn throughout his day.
While this type of notation of person health may not be a normal situation for boys his age, it is also not as uncommon as some may think. The Junior Diabetes Research Foundation states that about 80 people are diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes per day. About half of them are children.
Rasmussen said the event is something to look forward to each year.
"It's like a big homecoming," she said. "You get to meet new families and network with people who are in the same boat as you. It's a lot of fun."
