Dangers of Breast Implant Ruptures make implants a Time Bomb for Women reports Breast Enhancement Pills and Creams

(Medical-NewsWire.com, November 01, 2012 ) San Francisco, CA- Breast implant ruptures in Australia have soared in 2012, which has resulted in an urgent call for a national register of women to log their surgeries.

Over 400 breast implants produced by PIP, a French company, have ruptured between the nine months between January and September. The number comes from a medicine watchdog group, Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA).

The number has taken a staggering upturn, as 37 ruptures were recorded last year.
The TGA said last year it would not call more than 6,000 women who have PIP implants to have them removed. This, despite the fact that the French Government recommended all French women should in fact have them at least examined.

The TGA said they received only 37 indications of rupture and it was “well within the expected rupture rates for silicone breast implants.”

Senator Nick Xenophon, and independent, stated that the alarming new figures was proof the Government must take action immediately.

“The government needs to act on this as a matter of Urgency,” he stated.

The TGA has since been accused of playing down the danger, and yet the company maintains it had no statistical evidence to believe there would be widespread ruptures in Australia.

The Public Health Association’s Michael Moore said: “They didn’t have a system, a methodical system, for recording the number of implants. Therefore the conclusion was there was no danger.”

“The real issue at the time was there was no national register,” he said.

Senator Xenophon stated that the low number of ruptures recorded was a systemic failure and said that taxpayer dollars were now at stake.

“These registers will not only save many millions of health dollars being spent on avoiding a mess.

“Most importantly, it’ll save pain, suffering and, in some cases, lives, by preventing these devices from being on the market in the first place.”

The government is looking for funding options for a clinical register, according to the Parliamentary Secretary of Health, Catherine King.

The TGA did not respond to a request for comment.

Those who may be snickering at the idea of dolled-up beach bunnies with exploding implants should keep in mind that many women receive implants after having a mastectomy or due to congenital abnormalities.

Rod Cooter, the president of the Australian Society of Plastic Surgeons, noted that 30-40% of patients at his clinic who receive implants, do so because of mastectomies alone.
