Study finds Short, Hard Workouts Can Help Lose Weight reports Fit Fanatics

(Medical-NewsWire.com, November 13, 2012 ) London, UK -- There is no good excuse for excluding a couple short bursts of intense exercise in your day, according to new research from Colorado State. According to the study, only a few minutes of high-octane activity, mixed with lower-intensity exercising, can help burn calories all day long and ward off unwanted weight-gain.

Men participating the the study with the university were asked to perform a series of short workout that involved intense exertion on a stationary bike for a few minutes. The intense bursts were mixed in with less taxing exercises that spanned less than 25 minutes per day. Researchers found that the men burnt an extra 200 calories every day.

Working out at a high-intensity/low-intensity is a technique already well known with athletes. This regimen, called ‘sprint-interval training’, works just as well as more traditional workouts for weight loss.

The study was lead by Kyle Sevits of Colorado State University, based in Fort Collins. Sevits echoed the sentiment that your body uses more energy the more you tax it: “The harder you work, the more calories you burn per minute,” he said.

Sevits’ study asked five healthy men to ride an exercise bike as strenuously as possible for 30 seconds, five times. In between the bouts of hard-riding, resistance on the stationary bike was eliminated and the men were free to pedal at whatever intensity they chose for four minutes. The average age was 28 for the men involved in the study.

Sevits tabulated that the men burned an additional 200 calories per day, even after only working out for such a short time.

He presented the study’s findings at an exercise conference in Colorado, which was sponsored by the American Physiological Society, Canadian Society for Exercise Physiology and the American College of Sports Medicine.
