ItÂ’s No Longer 'Insanity' to Shed Pounds While Avoiding the Gym reports Fitness Choice

(Medical-NewsWire.com, November 08, 2012 ) Preston VIC , Australia -- A forty-minute intensive cardio and ab workout sounds like a day at the gym; however, the very same workout that can be done outside the home can also be done inside it.

The way technology has changed the world is universally vast, and one advantage that has emerged is the ability to get a quality workout from home through personal-training DVDs and videos.

“My roommate and I were looking for something to do when we didn’t feel like walking to the ARC and found a workout called Insanity,” said Adriana Zalloni, junior in LAS.

The insanity workout series is composed of multiple DVDs. The regimen covers a two-month period and each of its DVDs has a different workout that focuses on a particular aspect of fitness. Though the workouts that are completed throughout a week’s time are the same, the order in which each DVD is used changes. There is even recovery week added to help the body not plateau or breakdown from the high-intensity workouts. These workouts are under the same principle, but with less emphasis on intensity.

“Insanity has gotten me to do more workouts than I ever have. Some people want to go for a run or do the elliptical, but for me, I never want to do that,” Zalloni said. “I’m doing cardio, stretching, strengthening my muscles, I’m becoming more flexible. It encompasses everything in such a short period of time and there’s no excuse not to do it.”

The series can be purchased on Amazon for $145, and the instructor on the DVD shows you how to complete the objectives, just as a certified in-person coach would.

“There is a ‘fit test’ you do every two weeks. You can track your progress by how much you improve. The first time my roommate and I were awful; we could barely get through anything, but the second time we took the ‘fit test,’ we noticed our scores were higher and we were less out of breath.”

For years prior, individuals have been able to do yoga and Pilates from their homes. When it came to high-intensity and weight-cutting workouts however, people were left to either come up with their own plan, or use the gym. With DVD programs like P90X, as well as video games like “Just Dance” people are now able to find fantastic ways to get their workout in without having to travel to the gym.

“I used to be really into running but I hurt my knee so I couldn’t run long distances anymore,” said Kadambari Jain, junior in LAS. “I was trying to find some other way to stay in shape and since my hometown is really small and we don’t have gym, my friends and I saw a commercial for Insanity and decided to do it.”

For those who are not into the boot camp styles of Insanity or P90x, there are fusions of dance-workouts as well, such as Turbo Fire. The program creates a mixture of dance and kickboxing, allowing one to have a more celebratory workout, rather than a rigorous military-like one.

No matter what style, the goal is to get people active and healthy, but not feel like they are being punished, says Steven Petruzzello, an associate professor in kinesiology and community health.

“Whatever people can do to get out and move is a good thing. Whether that’s going to a gym or working out at home, moving is the key thing, because certainly as a society — and really becoming a worldwide epidemic — people don’t move enough,” Petruzzello said.
