(Medical-NewsWire.com, November 18, 2012 ) Carmichael, CA -- New research done by the dental staff and students at Dundee University has revealed that mouth cancer is more prominent than ever, and Scotland is leading the way.
Numbers show that Scotland has the worst percentage of people who get mouth cancer; 11.9 out of 100,000. This compares to England, which sees 8.1 out of 100,000 people diagnosed, as well as Wales, which sees 9.4 out of every 100,000 people diagnosed.
It is estimated that nearly 60,000 people in the UK will be diagnosed with mouth cancer over the next decade, 30,000 of whom will die due to lack of warning or detection.
The Dundee University dental unit will be sharing dental advice with the public during Mouth Cancer Awareness week coming up.
A clinical lecturer at the University, Dr. Simon Shepherd, said that people need to be aware of their own mouths in order for early detection to be possible. He added that people must be educated on the risk factors and causes of the disease in order to slow the high rate at which the UK sees oral cancer.
While mouth cancer is not always preventable, there are a few catalysts that if avoided, can help reduce the chances of getting it. Alcohol is a big risk factor. Consuming large amounts of alcohol can significantly increase the likelihood of obtaining mouth cancer, and Dr. Shepherd warns that this could be the reason the UK sees such rampant cases.
Another factor is smoking. While smoking has become a part of British culture, it can severely up the risk of mouth cancer. With harmful additives and the overuse of cigarettes can piggyback on the use of alcohol to attack the mouth.
Dr. Shepherd says that if people are aware of this at a younger age, it may deter them from such activity in the future.
Mouth cancer affects all ages, and while many people are under the impression that only old people get it, studies show that 1/10 cases affect people under the age of 45.
Other causes of mouth cancer include poor dental hygiene (not brushing your teeth, flossing, or using mouthwash on a regular basis). It is important to see a dentist every six months to have a professional make sure you are doing the right things to keep your mouth safe.
If you have these symptoms, it is important that you get checked immediately for your own safety: ulcers that do not heal for over two weeks; white and red coloring of the mouth; unusual bumps or swelling; and numbness of the tongue.
