Lack Of Nutrition, Omega-3 Affects ChildrenÂ’s Brains reports Omega 3 Revealed

(Medical-NewsWire.com, November 18, 2012 ) San Francisco, CA -- While children of all ages, colors, and creeds are affected by a lack of nutrition, recent studies have shown that poor children in underdeveloped countries are at the biggest risk. The studies highlight the specific lack of iron and omega-3 fatty acids that consequently affects brain development, which have been widely researched over the years.

The most recent study looked at 321 schoolchildren in South Africa over an eight and a half month period. The children ranged in age from 6-years-old to 11-years-old, and were deemed to have a lack of iron and omega-3 fatty acid intake in their daily lives.

The study revealed that children who received omega-3 fatty acids and iron on a consistent basis not only gained weight, but also improved cognitive ability in the classroom. This is not surprising, but rather informative to people not only in poor societies, but also in wealthier societies.

The study also showed that children who increased intake of iron helped in both verbal and nonverbal memory and learning, especially in children that suffer from anemia. However, the intake of omega-3 fatty acids seemed to have no effect on cognitive function or short or long memory in children suffering from anemia. It was also found that boys seemed to have a more profound response to increased levels of iron and omega-3 fatty acid intake.

Children’s health is universal and so is growth and development. Iron deficiency is the most common nutritional problem worldwide according to the World Health organization, affecting over two billion people. A major reason for this is lack of knowledge and information about the subject, even in areas that can afford the most nutritious food.

Lessons: The best way to get a good intake of omega-3 fatty acids is through consumption of oily fish. For iron, it is recommended to eat green vegetables as well as red meat, and supplements can also have a huge affect. Awareness is the key. With societies all over the world struggling to understand the importance of proper nutrition, we will continue to see a high rate of nutrition related illnesses and deaths.
