(Medical-NewsWire.com, December 07, 2012 ) San Francisco, CA -- Swedish bus stop in the the Umeaa area have been fitted with light therapy panels in order to assist commuters fight off the winter blues. The energy company behind it says it will benefit the general well-being of those who use the service.
When the winter season comes about in Umeaa, daylight lasts for a mere four hours. That means that most only get a minimal glimpse of sun through the office window during a workday.
"You feel tired during this time of the year, and getting an extra dose of light feels refreshing," said Anna Norrgaard, head of marketing at Umeaa Energy. The company is attempting to help commuters to combat depression by adding the light therapy panels at 30 separate bus stops.
The bus shelters with the illuminated advertising boards were replaced on Monday by the light therapy lamps. Five of the shelters were fitted with overhead panels to enhance the effect.
"You should stand in front of the lamps ... and keep your eyes open to let the light in," Norrgaard said.
While the lamps are to help the mentality of those who are in the cold-weather area; none should expect to gain a tan in the region that sees temperatures fall to minus-30 degrees Celsius.
The full benefits of the treatment can be felt later in the day, since half an hour's exposure per day is the general “benchmark” used for therapy, according to Norrgaard.
The time "varies between individuals," she added.
The aptly named Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) is a particular type of depression that is directly related to lack of late in the winter.
