(Medical-NewsWire.com, December 20, 2012 ) Goshen, MA, – Want to get more done, lots more accomplished? According to creativity expert Marcia Yudkin, the secret lies in a mental shift from “motivating yourself” to “noticing what motivates you.” Her new book, Inspired! How to Be More Original, Insightful and Productive in Your Work, explains in depth her perspective on natural motivation (http://www.yudkin.com/inspired.htm ).
“Most people have surprisingly inaccurate ideas about what motivates folks in general and themselves in particular,” says Yudkin, a business mentor and the author of 16 previous books. “For instance, studies show that when we’re asked the number one concern of our coworkers, we reply money. Yet in surveys on this question, interesting work actually comes out on top, far outranking concern for money. And when I talk to individuals undertaking big new projects, I often hear them describing a work setup that they believe is supposed to work for anyone in their position rather than what fits their idiosyncratic habits and preferences.”
Yudkin’s advice includes:
* Identify the situations and conditions in which you are intensely motivated and productive, and do your best to recreate those circumstances when you’d like to get things done. For example, Yudkin says she has never managed to clean her house on a regular schedule, but runs around in a flurry whenever she’s expecting guests. Her husband jokes, “Invite people over more often!”
* Slough off society’s “shoulds” around motivation, which can be surprisingly insidious. Understand whether you actually get things done for yourself or for others, in small chunks or big ones, because consequences loom or because nothing’s at stake, and so on.
* Notice daily and seasonal rhythms that you can accommodate rather than fight.
Inspired! How to Be More Original, Insightful and Productive in Your Work provides a wealth of examples, research studies, anecdotes and practical suggestions on identifying personal strengths, boosting intuition, increasing originality, generating a torrent of fresh ideas, formulating a customized creative process and much more. The book is available in paperback for $19.95 at Amazon.com or BN.com and for $9.99 in Amazon’s Kindle store or Barnes & Noble’s Nook store.
