(Medical-NewsWire.com, December 23, 2012 ) San Francisco, CA -- According to a new study, one group seems to have avoided the strong urgings of the California anti-smoking movement and campaigns: 18 to 24-year-olds have seemed to be unaffected by the effort, and in fact smoking amongst the group has increased.
The group is host to the largest smoking prevalence of any of the age groups, and the smoking rate has increased despite the strong efforts of education by the anti-smoking lobby.
Rates amongst the young adults rose from 12.3% from 2010 to 14.6% in 2011, according to the new study.
Persons within the group are often new to the independent lifestyle, and smoking is one of the first wholly independent choices that young adults see as their own. Colleen Stevens, branch chief for the state's tobacco control program stated that because many are on their own for the first time, they are often more apt to experiment with their boundaries.
"This is really a vulnerable age," she said.
Getting started is, of course, the easy part of smoking. The quitting portion, however, can be very difficult. Max Hnederson, a Cal State East Bay student, found that out firsthand when he decided to smoke when he was 16 years old.
I guess I was one of the youths that got sucked up into thinking it was rebellious and cool, and then I got addicted," said the history and political science major who is trying to wean himself from the habit.
Dr. Ron Chapman, who is a state health officer, released his wide-ranged report regarding the use of tobacco in California.
Among the findings: ● Use of smokeless tobacco products such as snuff, chewing tobacco and snus, a spitless tobacco that can be placed under the lip for extended periods of time, have nearly tripled in less than a decade, rising from $77 million in 2001 to $211 million in 2011. ● Undercover surveys have found more retailers selling cigarettes to minors. This year, 8.7 percent of retailers made such illegal sales, compared to 5.6 percent in 2011. ● Tobacco advertisements in stores are often less than three feet above the floor where they can be easily seen by children. ● The cost of having nearly 3.6 million Californians smoke is about $6.5 billion in health care-related expenses annually, or $400 per taxpayer. "The economic impact of smoking is a burden for us all, even if you don't smoke," Chapman said
