Handheld Dental X-Ray Device Deemed Unsafe reports Medical Careers Training

(Medical-NewsWire.com, December 25, 2012 ) San Francisco, CA -- Dentists worldwide are being warned not to purchase a particular cheap handheld x-ray machine over concerns that it may deliver excessive amounts of radiation. The dentists are also concerned it the devices could potentially harm patients.

The device in question, a Tianjie Dental Falcon scanner, have been reported to expose patients to 10 times the safely allowable dose of radiation. The handheld device, available online for less than $1000, could pose considerable risks to patients and dental care practitioners alike.

The Tianjie Falcon is manufactured by Zhengzhou Tianjie Electronics Equipment Co and is based in China. British officials have confirmed that one UK-based dental office has already purchased the device and believes that other offices have expressed interest in doing the same.

The Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency has urged any and all dental practices to contact them if they have purchased the device or know other offices that have.

A member of the MHRA enforcement team, Bruce Petrie, said that: “It’s vital that dentists and dental staff do not buy these dental X-ray machines from eBay or other websites because they are not approved and not safe for dentists or patients.”

He continued, stating, “We have seized 13 of these X-ray machines from the distributor and we are working with eBay and other governments to ensure dentists and patients are protected. We urge anyone who has bought one of these machines to contact us.”

The Health Protection Agency, alongside scientists from King’s College Hospital, London, have stated that an insufficient amount of lead shielding within the device allows potentially dangerous amounts of radiation to exit the device.

Donald Emerton was among the scientists that inspected the device at King’s College Hospital. The clinical evaluator said that: 'When we tested the X-ray machine, we found it did not properly protect either a potential patient, nor the person operating it.”

“Over time someone operating this machine, such as a dental assistant, would be exposed to unacceptable levels of accumulated radiation and this would have an increased risk to their health. I certainly wouldn’t want someone to use this piece of equipment to take an X-ray of me.”
