The biotechnology industry has expanded rapidly since 1992, with revenues increasing from $8 billion in 1992 to $50.7 billion in 2005. Combined with novel approaches in bioengineering and molecular genetics, the possibilities for stem cells therapeutics are unlimited. However, the progress is slowed by the further hurdles of financial, ethical, cultural and political concerns. Thus, in 2006, the US Congress passed a bill to expand stem cell research. However, President Bush issued the first veto of his presidency. In 2007, Congress, now in Democratic hands, passed a similar bill by a larger margin, but still not by enough to override the veto that President Bush announced on June 20, 2007.
