Lehigh Valley Hospital and Health Network Wins 2008 AMDIS Award

(EMAILWIRE.COM, May 21, 2008 ) Boston, Mass. and Allentown, Pa. – iMDsoft®, a leading provider of software solutions for the critical care and perioperative continuum, announced today that its client, Lehigh Valley Hospital and Health Network (LVHHN), was named one of the winners of the 2008 AMDIS Awards. The AMDIS awards are presented annually by the Association of Medical Directors of Information Systems and recognize individuals and healthcare organizations for excellence and achievement in applied medical informatics.

LVHHN is being recognized for employing an integrated suite of intensive care, anesthesia information management, and decision support applications to enhance patient safety, care quality, and process improvement initiatives including implementing and measuring compliance with best-practice guidelines. The hospital uses iMDsoft’s MetaVision Suite® including MV-ICU™, MVcentral™, and MV-OR™ along with Event Manager, a decision support tool, and Query Wizard, a query and report tool.

“The Award recognizes the efforts of many individuals in many departments,” said Elliot J. Sussman, M.D., president and CEO at LVHHN. “This includes clinical leadership from our anesthesiologists and anesthetists, the department of surgery and the perioperative nursing group, our forward-thinking information services team, hospital administration, finance, and our entire health network’s dedication to using technology to improve patient safety, care quality, and clinical outcomes.”

LVHHN has been preparing for and promoting quality and process improvements in its perioperative areas in anticipation of national implementation of the first of several public-reporting measures for the National Surgical Care Improvement Project. For SCIP 1, prophylactic antibiotics before surgery, LVHHN significantly increased administration of the appropriate antibiotic to surgical patients within the sixty minutes prior to surgical incision. Clinical staff customized Event Manager to provide quality surveillance detecting the presence or absence of documented antibiotic administration, and decision support to the point-of-care practitioner promoting correct practice. Links available through the MV-OR system provided access to appropriate antibiotic drug choice guidelines based on the proposed surgical procedure. Query Wizard enabled staff to frequently and quantitatively assess performance measures.

“We achieved dramatic improvements in compliance with best-practice guidelines for prophylactic antibiotic choice and timing, with an associated decrease in the incidence of surgical site infection,” said Thomas M. McLoughlin, Jr., M.D., chair, department of anesthesiology. “This represents significant quality and patient safety benefits specifically achieved due to our MV-OR implementation and the ability to document and measure our practice to assure sustained excellence.”

The Association of Medical Directors of Information Systems is a non-profit organization representing over 1,800 physician leaders, who are responsible for information technology in their organization(s). Judging criteria for the AMDIS award includes demonstration of a successful medical information systems/technology application and use of information systems to improve patient care, to support a more effective medical practice, and to improve work flow and contain health costs. The winners will be honored at the 17th annual Physician Computer Connection Symposium, July 15 - 18, 2008. For more information visit: http://www.amdis.org/pcc.htm

“We are thrilled that AMDIS chose to reward the initiative of the team at Lehigh Valley Hospital and Health Network in applying advanced clinical information technology to improving patient safety and care quality,” said Phyllis Gotlib, CEO and co-founder of iMDsoft. “We continue to be impressed with their commitment to healthcare information technology leadership, and are proud of our ongoing partnership with them and the benefits it brings to clinicians and patients alike.”
