SmartLipo Reduces Risks and Downtime for Liposuction Patients

(EMAILWIRE.COM, December 19, 2008 ) Liposuction is less invasive and more effective now than ever. SmartLipo is a laser technique that allows patients to undergo procedures on an outpatient basis, with merely a local anesthetic and no need to put the patient under general anesthesia. Doctors across the country are now certified in the specialized technique, and patients are lining up for this minimally invasive, “back to work Monday” procedure.

Use of the smart lipo system enables surgeons to operate with the patient in an upright position, so they can see how gravity affects the part of the body they are working on. “The patient can be involved in the treatment” one surgeon said. “They are awake and engaged and we can discuss the procedure and effects as it is taking place.”

Smart lipo was developed in Europe, and approved by the FDA in 2006. It has rapidly become the liposuction method of choice, proving safer than traditional lipo and yielding more permanent results. Patients who have undergone liposuction in the past can still benefit from SmartLipoÂ’s cutting edge techniques that help to re-contour problem areas and prevent fat from returning to the same area.

“The main goal that we want to achieve with the use of Smart Lipo is to help people to look better” says Dr Robert True, who uses smart lipo techniques in his Colleyville, TX practice. “When people look better, their self esteem is boosted. This is a procedure we can offer to help people to feel great about themselves.” True added that he feels SmartLipo is a lower risk procedure than traditional liposuction. “It’s a wonderful technology that reduces infection and decreases bleeding,” he said.

One to two days rest after SmartLipo is generally recommended by most surgeons, but some patients may not even need that. “We are seeing more and more patients book ‘Lunch Hour Lipo’” stated another practitioner. “Traditional liposuction leaves the patient feeling like they’ve been hit by a truck, with visible bruising and fairly severe pain. With SmartLipo, the bruising is considerably less and the aches and pains are more comparable to a strenuous workout.”

The increasing popularity of this type of cosmetic surgery has led physicians across the country to train in the use of smart lipo procedures. One of the advantages of laser surgery is the ability to work on areas of the body that are too small for regular liposuction to be safely performed. Facial work around the cheeks and neck is now possible, as well as tightening behind the knees and other problem spots that were formerly untreatable.

Dr Wertheim, the Medical Director of Advanced Laser of Long Island, finds SmartLipo to be a natural addition to his practice, which focuses on minimally invasive aesthetic medical procedures. “The procedures we perform prove to have beneficial effects not only to our patients’ skin but to their overall sense of confidence and psychological well being," said Wertheim, who has been in practice for over 24 years.
