LOCAL PAIN SPECIALIST: BAD ECONOMY MAY BE THE CAUSE OF YOUR ACHING BACK OR NECK

(EMAILWIRE.COM, February 10, 2009 ) MIRAMAR, FLORIDA - In recent months, Dr. Lowell Davis has noticed a significant increase in the number of Americans who have been reporting muscle and joint pain symptoms. Dr. Davis identifies the culprit that is causing all of these additional aches and pains: “You can thank the current economic crisis for your pain,” he explains.

Fortunately, though, Dr. Davis offers a solution that will help relieve you of the pain: Laugh, jog, run, make love, and relax!

ItÂ’s true. The recent economic problems so many Americans have experienced lately have been causing a huge jump in the number of people with back, neck, and general muscle pain. Concerns about making house payments, heating costs, and other financial obligations make people worry. Worry and stress are the most common causes of back and neck pain.

“When people experience stress and tension, the muscles in their backs, shoulders, and necks begin to tighten. Over long periods of time, these muscle contractions cause nerve pain. This can be severe enough to limit your movements, and to cause headaches and other aches and pains,” Dr. Davis warns.

The most effective way to stop these aches and pains is to stretch those sore muscles and get active. Walking, running, jogging, playing sports, dancing, and many other physical activities will help you to stretch out those tight muscles and find freedom from the pain.

“Rid your body of excess physical energy and find relief. By exercising until you sweat, you can accomplish exactly this, and soon you’ll find the pain has disappeared,” advises Dr. Davis.

The brains of people who are stressed or depressed release chemicals that cause the body to become more sensitive to aches and pains. This, combined with the tight muscles, increases the bodyÂ’s experience of pain.

But when people exercise, their brains produce chemicals in the brain called endorphins, which make them feel better and experience less pain. When the brain is producing these chemicals, it also produces fewer of the chemicals that cause people to feel pain.

Other activities that will help you to relieve stress and experience this feeling of well-being include swimming, bicycling, work out, or work on your physical relationship with your partner. All of these things will help your brain produce more of the “good” chemicals that make you feel better, and less of the “bad” chemicals that make you feel pain and stress.

Dr. Davis also has excellent advice for people who aren’t able to exercise, or when people don’t have time to exercise: “There are other things you can do to help relieve the stress, too. Try talking about the problems with a trusted friend, or find ways to laugh at the problems that are causing you stress.”

You may have read before that it takes 13 muscles to smile, but 70 to frown. Dr. Davis also counsels his patients, however, that laughter actually causes a person’s muscles to relax. “Laughing stretches one’s muscles and increases the amount of oxygen that gets to body tissues. It’s actually as beneficial to the body as mild exercise, such as taking a walk.”

Dr. Davis also reminds readers: “Avoid taking the stress out on your family and friends. In the long run, this will only make your stress and anxiety worse.” He recommends, “Don’t let your worries take the enjoyment out of your life; protect your health and relationships - act now and relieve the stress!”
