(EMAILWIRE.COM, October 29, 2009 ) Boca Raton, FL - - - With over 800 registrants, this unprecedented event raised more than $22,000 for Sharsheret, a not-for-profit organization supporting Jewish women and families facing breast cancer.
Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz opened the event with inspirational remarks about her own battle with the disease. She then joined renowned oncologist, Dr. Louise Morrell and more than 800 runners and walkers for the 5K Walk/Run on Montoya Circle in Boca Raton.
"We are grateful and inspired by the 800 racers who came out in support of Sharsheret," says Rochelle Shoretz, the organization's Founder and Executive Director. "We are excited to bring Sharsheret's national services to Boca to address the needs of Florida families facing breast cancer."
About Sharsheret
Since the organization's founding in 2001, Sharsheret has received more than 15,000 phone calls from those affected by breast cancer, health care professionals, women's organizations, Jewish organizations, and others interested in learning more about the important services Sharsheret provides nationwide. In response to the needs of young Jewish women facing breast cancer Sharsheret has developed the following programs:
The Link Program
• Peer Support Network, connecting women newly diagnosed or at high risk of developing breast cancer with others who share similar diagnoses and experiences;
• Embrace, supporting women living with advanced breast cancer;
• Empower, addressing the concerns of women without partners facing breast cancer;
• Genetics for Life, focusing on hereditary breast cancer;
• Family Focus, answering questions of caregivers and family members.
Education and Outreach Programs
• Health Care Symposia on issues unique to younger women facing breast cancer;
• Sharsheret Supports, a national model for local support groups;
• Sharsheret on Campus, outreach to high school and college students;
• Facing Breast Cancer as a Jewish Woman educational resource booklet series;
• National Volunteer Program with representatives across the country.
Quality of Life Programs
• Busy Box, for young parents facing breast cancer;
• Best Face Forward to address the cosmetic side effects of treatment.
