Patients and the public are invited to donate new, unwrapped gifts. Cosmopolitan's Savage and Lakeville offices are drop-off points again this year. Gifts can be donated through December 19.
Dr. Trudy Bonvino (http://www.cosmoortho.com/staff-directory.php), who offers multiple types of braces for children children and adult orthodontics patients, reminds patients that giving does more than make them feel good; they get something in exchange.
"Patients who give toys to Toys for Tots will get tokens, which can be saved and turned in later for prizes," Bonvino said. "We enjoy taking part in community-related events, and this is a program that makes it easy to get our patients involved, too."
In the time that Cosmopolitan has participated in the program, Bonvino's patients have shown their generosity, she said.
Toys for Tots started in 1947, when U.S. Marine Corps Reserve Maj. Bill Hendricks and other California Marine Reservists collected and distributed thousands of new and refurbished toys to underprivileged children (http://www.cosmoortho.com/early-treatment.php).
Thirty-one years ago, the Marines switched to collecting and distributing only new toys.
The purpose behind the Marines' efforts to collect and give toys to needy children is to deliver a hopeful message to kids in need, with the idea in mind that it will prompt them to become "responsible, productive, patriotic citizens," according to the organization's website.
