(Medical-NewsWire.com, January 10, 2012 ) Vancouver, WA -- 2012 marks the 60th anniversary of the exercise treadmill. To mark this passage, Treadmill World is offering coupons worth up to $75 on all ProForm treadmills.
Treadmills powered by animals were used in the 1800s agricultural and industrial purposes, such as threshing wheat and churning butter. Around the same time, treadmills for humans began to be used as punishment in American prisons. This was an age when physical labor was commonplace and avoiding it in leisure time was an understandable priority.
Then in 1952, University of Washington professors Dr. Quinton and Dr. Bruce developed the modern treadmill to aid the diagnosis of lung disease. Of course, since then it has caught on as a fitness machine, especially for baby-boomers of about the same age. The Sporting Goods Manufacturers Association (SGMA) puts the modern fitness movement at 40 years old. This would mean it started a few years after the publication of the groundbreaking book Aerobics, by Kenneth Cooper.
In 2012 it seems like common sense that people can improve their health through fitness, but this was not always widely believed. As the dangers of smoking and being overweight became better known in the 1960s and 1970s, commercial gyms sprouted. These establishments flourished in the 1980s, along with their ever-improving treadmills, steppers, and exercise bikes. Treadmills have now improved to the point where it is more economical to buy a good treadmill for home use, rather than going to a gym.
However, people still need some incentives. So for 2012 Treadmill World is offering various coupons for all its ProForm models.
