(Medical-NewsWire.com, January 12, 2012 ) Denver, CO - Eyelid rejuvenation was the second most popular male cosmetic surgery procedure in 2010, according to a study conducted by the American Society of Plastic Surgeons. "Eyelid surgery (blepharoplasty) or the use of facial fillers to reduce the appearance of bags under the eyes can take years off a person's appearance," says ophthalmic plastic surgeon Dr. Michael McCracken. "We've seen the rejuvenating effects on women, but what about the results with men? Why do men sometimes end up with a feminine look?"
"How does any male patient get a result that looks good, but retains his masculine qualities? I think that the most common mistake made in men (and also women, by the way) is removal of too much upper lid skin and fat, says Dr. McCracken, medical director of the McCracken Eye and Face Institute. A well- trained eye can spot this in a woman, but even a novice can pick up on the "weirdness" of over-done male eyelids. I think the over-resection has a very feminizing appearance. For example, a woman who has too much eyelid skin & fat removed looks a little weird, but a man's eye can look like those of a woman
Dr. McCracken says another common mistake is excessive lifting of the male brow or arching of the male brow during a brow lift. The male brow is different than the female brow in that: 1) It is lower and 2) It is more straight rather than arched," he says.
Another anatomic difference is that males tend to have lower eyelid creases than women. Elevating the crease during eyelid rejuvenation can also give a feminized appearance, says Dr. McCracken.
