(EMAILWIRE.COM, January 23, 2012 ) New York, NY -- The JAL Foundation was created in 2008 by David Valentine LaBorde, MD, MBA. Since that time, over 90 students have participated in the foundationÂ’s programming. Competitive applicants must demonstrate academic excellence and a commitment to a career in healthcare. David Valentine LaBorde, MD, MBA, is proud to announce that four recent participants have successfully matriculated and gone on to enroll in medical school.
"I started the JAL Foundation in order to inspire young people to enter careers in healthcare related professions," says David Valentine LaBorde, MD, MBA. "As I talked to young people, I heard them say that it was difficult for them to find mentors in medicine willing to take the time to precept them and provide helpful guidance as they worked through their undergraduate programs. In fact, many of them considered changing careers paths as a result. Dr. LaBorde’s objective via the JAL Foundation has been to, “engage participants in research and other meaningful experiences with the hopes of nurturing their interest in the healthcare related professions and I'm happy to report that this approach seems to be meeting with success."
Students in the JAL Foundation participate in original research related to one of six target areas:
• Biomedical and clinical research
• Healthcare information technology and informatics
• Healthcare operations research
• Healthcare economics
• Healthcare entrepreneurship
• Senior design projects (computer science majors)
Both undergraduate and graduate students are encouraged to participate. "Our participants have been graduating high school seniors, undergraduates and graduate students. We encourage any talented and interested individuals to apply," says David Valentine LaBorde, MD, MBA. "We take in students from all walks of life, and this cross-pollination of students from different cultures and different economic levels often proves quite beneficial."
The JAL Foundation provides students with the opportunity to do gain exposure to healthcare related professions. Participants in the JAL FoundationÂ’s programs have done original research and several have published their work in peer-reviewed journals. Participants receive a significant amount of mentoring from Dr. LaBorde and graduates of the JAL Foundation join an impressive group of JAL Foundation alums.
