(EMAILWIRE.COM, January 31, 2012 ) Washington, Missouri -- A health care system administered by St. Louis based Sisters of Mercy Health System is now offered at no cost to all people interested in four different states. The primary focus of course is on health education.
The Sisters of Mercy Health System has offered a free online health education program to four different states in the United States: Kansas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, and Missouri. They have offered the use of the HealthTeacher program absolutely free in order to teach health education to students in different school districts. According to reports, around 214 schools in the said states have taken advantage of this offer.
The HealthTeacher system is a curriculum that is especially designed for the use of K-12 teachers and instructors. The material included in the HealthTeacher curriculum is suited for students in elementary, middle school, and high school. This curriculum can be used by itself as a stand alone health education curriculum or it can be used to supplement or in conjunction with the current health education curriculum already in use in different schools.
The HealthTeacher curriculum was launched back in January 20, 2000 and has since been found very useful for teaching students in a classroom or even those in home school. Mental health centers, community based health centers, and other venues have found the curriculum to be very adaptable and useful. This is one reason why the HealthTeacher online health education program was chosen for this initiative.
Making this Internet based health program available at zero cost for K-12 schools is part of commitment made by the Sisters of Mercy Health System that will span a total of five years committing a total of five million dollars in funding. This partnership with the Sisters of Mercy is a first for the HealthTeacher curriculum and has proven to be very promising.
The HealthTeacher curriculum deals with the health risks that the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention considers as leading issues in the country. They include the following: physical inactivity, tobacco use, inadequate nutrition, sexual activity leading to HIV infection, other STDs, and unwanted pregnancies, alcohol and other drug use, and actions that lead to either unintentional or intentional injury.
The curriculum lists several goals that should be met for each participant in the online health education program. The first one is to help teachers overcome any hindrance or constraints in facilitating a comprehensive form of health education in a classroom setting. Next is to address any behavioral and health issue that are significant to the kids of today. And finally, to increase the health literacy among all professionals and individuals who do teach health education.
The effect of this curriculum is rather holistic. For example, in one school that implements the this health education curriculum, first grade students do deep breathing exercises for one minute right after recess utilizing an app provided by HealthTeacher. Teachers observed that this exercise calms the kids down enough to put them back into the classroom mindset.
