Killeen, TX -- Cappolino Dodd Krebs, a leader in obtaining compensation for those afflicted by workplace illnesses, is conducting a free seminar on coal tar pitch exposure for current and former Alcoa employees on Thursday, Feb. 23 from 5-7 p.m. at the Lucy Patterson Center in Rockdale. Medical and legal professionals will attend the workshop to help answer questions about the health effects of coal tar pitch exposure. Refreshments will be provided.
A September 2011 letter from Alcoa urged certain Alcoa employees who worked around coal tar pitch for a year or more to get regular screenings. According to the letter, Alcoa would pay for the screenings. However, Alcoa says it is not responsible for anything beyond screenings. If the test is positive, the employee would have to call upon their own resources.
Richard Dodd, a senior partner with Cappolino Dodd Krebs in Cameron, said that many friends and clients wanted more information after receiving AlcoaÂ’s letter. These requests prompted the need for the workshop.
"That letter raised concerns about the amount of exposure to coal tar pitch workers at the Rockdale plant may have endured over their careers," he said. Coal tar pitch is a by-product of burning coal and is a key ingredient in the manufacture of anode blocks. It is considered a human carcinogen by OSHA, the Centers for Disease Control and the National Institutes of Health.
Dodd said that his firm has helped several former Alcoa employees recover financial compensation for cancer caused by coal tar pitch exposure. The types of cancer that are recognized by the scientific and medical communities as being associated with exposure to coal tar pitch include lung cancer, bladder cancer, kidney cancer and skin cancers, including basal cell cancer and squamous cell cancer.
