(EMAILWIRE.COM, February 22, 2012 ) Minneapolis, MN -- Dr. John Woell from Dental Health Care Center recently traveled to Lima Peru with a team of 40 doctors, dentists, and other medical providers to perform free cleft lip surgery. The team performed over 200 surgeries in 10 days. Cleft lips and palates are birth defects whereby a gap (cleft) is left in the lip or palate of the mouth.
The condition can be corrected with surgery if performed at a young age. "I have been part of the team for 5 years. It is a rewarding experience to see these children transform from self-conscious individuals as a result of their cleft deformities to confident and outgoing kids after their surgeries. Being here also really makes one appreciate how lucky we are to live in the United States," says Dr. Woell.
