LegalView Applauds Military's Stance to Reduce TBI

(EMAILWIRE.COM, March 28, 2012 ) Philadelphia, PA - For many Americans who are deployed in Afghanistan, TBI, or traumatic brain injury, is a very real threat. However, properly diagnosing a TBI can be difficult - sometimes there are symptoms and sometimes, there are not.

LegalView, a leading online legal resource, has chronicled traumatic brain injuries, providing veterans with free legal consultations about brain injury lawsuits.

The Army has had a particularly bad record of diagnosing this injury, but now, it's trying to get closer to the injury by treating it on the battlefield.

Nineteen-year-old Army Pvt. Cody Dollman has been injured three times by road side bombs since his deployment in April 2011. The last injury he sustained was the worst. When he was hit, he shook it off, but then, he began experiencing headaches and vomiting, so he sought treatment. The medic that treated him said he was a sure bet for TBI. Many times, TBI is often caused by blasts as a blast violently shakes the brain inside the skull.

However, when medics try to diagnose these injuries it can be hard because sometimes there are no symptoms and the symptoms can be confused by other war-related brain injuries such as post-traumatic stress disorder, or PTSD. According to Navy Cmdr. Greg Caron, a clinical psychiatrist, a blast-related concussion affects the same region of the brain that is implicated with anxiety and mood disorders.

The reason why the Army wants to spot the injury on the battlefield is that many soldiers make treatment difficult because they- and their leaders- don't like being taken away from their units, so they tend to shake off many of these injuries.

To help correct the military's track record, the Kandahar concussion care center has been created. Here, once soldiers are injured, they can immediately be treated and neurologists are on-staff to determine whether or not a solider can go back to fight.

The center also has occupational therapists on-staff and an MRI machine in the trailer, which is a first for a military field hospital.

Getting soldiers to rest up but stay in Afghanistan seems to be working well as it gets soldiers back out on the battlefield quickly. Army leaders and soldiers like this idea and are starting to see the benefit of having the Kandahar concussion care center available.

Keeping soldiers healthier, but getting them back to the battlefield faster, may be the sort of technique that may help senior military officials embrace this new approach to TBI.
