 (EMAILWIRE.COM, March 16, 2012 ) Washington, DC -- A study conducted overseas suggests that teens who rack up hours on the internet every day have an increased incidence of drug use and substance abuse.
The study published in the March issue of the Journal of Addiction Medicine was conducted by the Aristotle University in Thessaloniki . Researchers surveyed over 1,200 students between 14 and 19 years old and classified them according to their internet usage, based on a 20-question test. Those who were classified as “internet addicts” were also the ones who reported problems with substance abuse.
“While the results of this study are eye-opening, they aren’t completely shocking,” begins a spokesperson for Mountainside Drug Rehab and Alcohol Treatment Center. “Those with one addiction are often prone to develop other addictions or even switch addictions. That’s one of the aspects that effective substance abuse treatment focuses on: knowing what the addiction is, how to conquer it and not to switch from one addiction to another. This study doesn’t necessarily prove that, just because a teen spends a lot of time on the internet, he or she is, or will begin, using drugs. Parents should view it as an alert to potential abuse issues and even more closely monitor the signs of drug abuse and alcoholism within their teen.”
