(Medical-NewsWire.com, July 03, 2012 ) Dothan, AL -- The Maryland Coalition of Families for Children’s Mental Health (MCF) is the “go-to” organization for parents or caregivers of children and youth with behavioral needs. MCF was created through the joint efforts and shared commitment of eight separate entities focused on family and advocacy. Since its incorporation in 1999, MCF has become the statewide voice in Maryland for children’s behavioral health.
The coalition provides assists families through a variety of services, which include:
Family Navigators – MCF provides the no cost service of Family Navigators to any parent or caregiver of a child, 0-21 years of age, with special needs. A Family Navigator is a true-life parent who has cared for a child with needs and has received training to help them assist families. They are knowledgeable about the services provided in their communities and are there to explain rights, listen to concerns and assist with the application process.
Wraparound and Family Support Partners – “Wraparound” is the name of a program that provides a collection of services and supports that are “wrapped around” the child and family. A family must be referred and approved by the Department of Juvenile Services, Department of Social Services, Maryland Cares, or Rural Cares to participate in the program. Once approved, the family is paired with the Care Management Entity which provides families with healthcare, other service options and assigns a Care Coordinator. The family is also assigned a Family Support Partner through the MCF. The Family Support Partner, much like a Family Navigator, provides support and assists the family make choices regarding services, support groups and educational programs for their child with behavioral needs.
Family Leadership Institute – The Family Leadership Institute (FLI) is an intensive training and leadership program tasked to prepare parents and caregivers on how to become better advocates for their children and leaders that shape the systems designed to provide forms of care. The institute’s typically runs over the course of six weekends a few times a year and teaches parents and caregivers how to access information, leadership tactics, and presents a great forum and networking opportunity with other leaders and professionals in the field of children’s mental/behavioral health.
