Gynecomastia is the abnormal development of mammary glands in males that results in breasts being formed. The term derived from the Greek “gyne” meaning “woman” and “mastos” meaning “breast”. This is a problem that is quite a common condition amongst male adults in the U.S. Up to 60% of teenage males have man boobs, leading to around 30% of male adults suffering from this embarrassing condition through their lifetime.
Peter Rockel, who also suffered from the condition, has created a website with information about how he lost his own man boobs. Rockel hopes to help other men in a similar situation by directing them to the book he read, based on Chinese methods, rather than surgical solutions.
“This is a problem that we’re seeing affecting a very large segment of the male population,” said Peter Rockel, who dedicated a website to helping men with this problem. “It’s embarrassing, but I wanted other men who suffer from the same problem I did, to realize that there is a solution in the form of this book based on Eastern methods. By reading it, you’re going to be exposed to ways to lose man boobs you never thought of previously, and it’s going to increase your quality of life tremendously.”
Although increased levels of obesity and inactivity have contributed to the rise in this condition, it is also something that affects males that are of a normal weight as well. Hormone imbalances have also been seen to cause man boobs, particularly increases in the female hormone estrogen. An imbalance in testosterone can also cause a predominance of estrogen which increases the formation of breast tissue.
Up to 10% of cases are due to side effects from prescription drugs, including Spironolactone (Aldactone), Digoxin and Furosemide. Man boobs are also found in older men as their skin has less elasticity and thus will have a greater abundance of excess skin related to gynecomastia. As you age, particularly if you are overweight, your skin is unable to maintain the shape of your chest and sagging will occur and you are left with man boobs.
“Man boobs aren’t just a problem affecting men who are overweight, in fact, when I was plagued with the problem I wasn’t obese, and this book really focuses on techniques that are going to provide results, regardless of body type,” said Rockel. “I want men to know they don’t have to spend their lives being self-conscious and miserable, and they don’t have to turn to surgery to fix this problem.”
