Affordable Care Act gives Women better coverage over Men in preventive health care reports HPWH.com.au

(Medical-NewsWire.com, August 31, 2012 ) San Francisco, CA -- The Affordable Health Care Act of 2010 increased the accessibility of health care for women, putting men at a disadvantage. The services that they were more inclined to receiving were related to sex and reproduction.

The services that women were provided comprised of free testing for HIV, chlamydia, gonorrhea and other advantages for women. Not only did these services consist of tests, but also offering women training for breast feeding and other related concerns.

The law states that any new or previous existing health system has to abide by some certain pre-decided rules. Health services that come under the banner of the U.S. Preventative Services Tax Force, Center for Disease Control and Prevention and Health Resources and Services Admission need to be provided to women for low and affordable costs. This normally includes pregnancy and immunization related health services.

Senator Barbara Mikulski, according to the WashingtonPost.com, recently solved an outcry where the average age recommended for a mammography was pushed to 50 for convenience. In the light of this law, it was brought back to 40, as is considered appropriate by doctors.

This health law is sadly, only limited to women who can utilize the services by purchasing free birth control, but it doesn’t apply to men and thus, vasectomies aren’t free of charge. There have been complaints regarding this rule because doctors who specialize in male health claim that this could’ve been advantageous for women as well, since they can avoid pregnancy.

David Bell, who is the medical director at Family Planning Institute in New York, said: “Men will normally not opt for vasectomies because they’re expensive. Applying the health law for these operations could’ve been a massive help for family planning.”

HIV Screening is also given for free to men selectively. Only those who have sex with multiple people receive this benefit. The excuse is that for men, there is not enough evidence of the occurrence, thus eliminating the cost is harmful.

It is expected that new health plans in December will cover the average male’s sexual health needs. Many experts say that its fair women get more advantage for sexual health check-ups, since they are usually the one’s suffering from these problems due to the men they have sexual relations with. Whereas, others argue on the basis of equality, saying men deserve the same rights when it comes to health related services.
