(Medical-NewsWire.com, September 01, 2012 ) San Francisco, CA -- Hearing problems at any age are no laughing matter and getting older only worsens the conditions if not checked at the right time, but according to latest findings by a U.S. backed panel of experts, testing aging adults for hearing problems, without their actually being symptoms, is useless.
The reason cited by the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF) was that there was no proper evidence to back the claim that tests should be carried out when a person enters a certain age. According to Reuters, the report was released on Monday, August 27, 2012.
Having said that, the USPSTF also went on to add that doctors should not be stopped from carrying on with such tests on patients that actually do show symptoms of hearing related problems.
Dr. Albert Siu, co-vice chair of the USPSTF and from the Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York, stresses the need for check ups if hearing problems are imminent or already causing issues.
"If you have a hearing problem, you should absolutely bring it up with your doctor," said Dr. Siu.
"This is not about fancy audiometric screenings," Dr. Siu added while talking to Reuters Health. "This is just about simple screenings that doctors and clinicians can do in the office."
The panel described how doctors should be making sure that their patients are not suffering from such hearing related problems and do confirm there would be no harm in getting a test done. They are simply stating requiring the test is unneeded.
One of the biggest issues why many older adults hesitate to go through such screenings is due to the fact that hearing aids, if needed, are expensive and do not get covered by insurance.
